National physical laboratory, New Delhi

Solid state portable cooler

India's National Physical Laboratory has developed a portable, solid state cooling technology that does not require the compressor or refrigerant found in conventional refrigerators. It can therefore run off a low-power supply of only 75 Watts DC, e.g. directly from solar photovoltaic cells and batteries. The cooler was developed for two principle applications: 

1. as a low-cost refrigerator for rural populations to store food and provide affordable comfort

2. to compliment India’s immunization program for rural populations of children by storing vaccines at low temperatures for a long time. 

With a long lifespan and needing little maintenance, the solid state cooler maintains 5 °C at an ambient temperature of 40 °C but can cool to -2 °C if required.

Smart Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

DrivAmp provides solutions for smart electric vehicle charging infrastructure to enable the transition to global electric mobility through products and software services. DrivAmp has developed a range of level-2 AC charging stations ranging in capacity from 3.3 kW to 43 kW power output, capable of charging all types of electric vehicles. This includes a protocol to ensure maximum safety of users and at the same time the ability to cater to most vehicles in the Indian electric vehicle market. DrivAmp helps enterprises to set up a network of electric vehicle charging stations with a focus on safety, security and energy access.

Woshapp

Woshapp

Through the Woshapp app, Woshapp takes the car wash to the car and reduces the amount of water needed for each wash. Woshapp’s goal is to revolutionize the way we clean cars using sustainable and environmentally friendly methods. On average it takes 1.5 hours to wash a car and in addition about 200 litres of water are consumed per wash. Woshapp service agents cycle to the car and carefully hand wash it in an environmentally friendly way, using only about 400 millilitres of water per wash, thereby saving 99% of the water consumed by a regular car wash. The method provides better quality than a mechanical car wash, avoiding the scratches that can occur.

Batterypool

Battery swapping for two-wheeler EVs in India

Batterypool offers a battery swapping service for users of two-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs). Using this app-enabled swapping service, users will have their two-wheel EV fully charged in under 1 minute, compared to 4 hours with plug-in charging. Batterypool's ecosystem also makes owning a two-wheeler EV 30% cheaper than its petrol counterpart. The battery swapping service is enabled by patent pending swap station hardware, product design, a small business retail model and an Internet-of-Things layer. India has the largest two-wheeler vehicle market in the world. Using this model Batterypool intends to drive the mass adoption of electric mobility among two-wheelers.

Takachar

Small-scale decentralised upgrading of waste

Takachar developed technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and licensed it in order to develop small-scale, low-cost, portable biomass treatment systems that can be attached to the back of tractors, trailers, or even donkey carts. Takachar’s mobile biomass systems can then be deployed on farms in remote areas to take small pockets of biomass residues and process them onsite into a chemically densified form that is moisture-resistant and volumetrically dense. This can in turn reduce the logistical, collection, and disposal cost by about 75% compared to current alternatives such as baling and pelleting. Takachar therefore provides farmers with a cost-effective way to clear their land of crop residues rapidly after harvest.

SustLabs uses automated metering and big-data analytics to ‘decode’ real-time electricity consumption data at residential level up to heavy appliance level by analysing smart meter data. SustLabs predicts this will lead to transition of compulsive electricity consumers to informed users.

Refurbed is a marketplace for refurbished electronics, that are used products that are completely renewed, so they look like new and function like new. Refurbed created a platform for products with consistent, high standards of quality, safety and warranty. The aim is to make sustainable living affordable to all members of society by allowing consumers to easily buy refurbished equipment. Refurbished products are up to 70% more environmentally friendly compared to a new product. Since its launch Refurbed has already reduced CO₂ emissions by over 1500 tonnes, 8 tonnes of e-waste and planted over 20 000 trees. Refurbed is operating in Germany and Austria and has first tests running in Poland and Italy.

Energy Efficient Ceiling Fan

In a tropical country like India, fans have been the greatest source of comfort during harsh summers. With an aim to reduce power consumption and contribute towards a better environment, Atomberg Technologies stepped into the industry in 2015 with the Gorilla Ceiling Fan. Whereas other fans consume around 75 Watts at full speed, Gorilla fans consume only 28 Watts, achieved using a brushless DC motor design and a driving algorithm called “atomsense”, which precisely senses various motor parameters in real time and controls the motor in a closed loop, avoiding power losses.

BEAD is an AI-based system that analyzes, optimizes and operates a building’s energy management and related marketing strategies and operations by measuring real-time occupancy data. BEAD sensors analyze human behaviors and occupancy changes inside the building. With the use of BEAD software, occupancy cycles, movements, and density change information can be collected. 100% Biodegradable Sanitary Pads

Saathi is a purpose-driven sustainable manufacturing company that makes eco-friendly hygiene products. Saathi’s mission is to create hygiene products that are good for the body, environment, and community. Saathi’s 100% biodegradable sanitary pad is made from an agricultural by-product, banana fibre, one of the most absorbent and abundant natural fibres in India. Unlike wood pulp or cotton, the raw materials for Saathi’s sanitary pads don’t require additional land. They also don’t contain any bleacher chemicals, thereby minimising skin irritation and the release of toxins into the environment upon disposal.

Insect based protein and natural commodities

Hexafly are developing new material sources for the aqua feed, chitin and plant nutrition industries from the sustainable farming of insects. In the next few years, Hexafly predicts that the exponential increase in demand for fish food will far exceed supply and the industry will not be able to meet this demand due to declining wild fish stocks, stricter fishing quotas and an increase in material costs. Hexafly’s aim is to bring an insect farming revolution to the world and find smart ways to feed the planet. Hexafly is also developing novel chitin extraction technologies. Chitin is a high-value bio-polymer with many uses in medicine, cosmetics and as a food additive.

Coolar UG

Coolar

Coolar has produced an electricity-independent medical refrigerator. The Coolar system uses warm water that is heated through solar energy and stored in a water tank. It does not use any moving parts, hazardous cooling fluids or lubricants. Thus, the Coolar system is a cheap, durable and sustainable solution for storage of vaccines, medicines and food in regions with unreliable or expensive electricity. The Coolar system runs independently from electricity by using solar heat, which makes it almost carbon neutral. Such a refrigerator can enable doctors and health professionals to preserve lifesaving medicine and vaccines in a reliable and eco-friendly way.

Heliac

Low-cost solar heat

Heliac’s solar collectors produce utility-scale heat at unsubsidized costs they claim is below that of fossil fuels anywhere in the world. By using inexpensive lenses that work like magnifying glasses and generate temperatures up to 400 °C, Heliac targets process heat markets responsible for 15% of the global demand. These markets include desalination, district heating and cooling, and heat for numerous other standard industrial processes. Heliac believes their solution is scalable enough to meet any potential demand today. Their first 2 MW solar field is in operation in Denmark producing heat for district heating.

NÜWIEL GmbH

Intelligent electric bike trailers

NÜWIEL has developed and built an electric bicycle trailer that automatically follows the movement of the bicycle. The cyclist does not feel the load of the trailer or the cargo. The trailer, thanks to a special coupling, is mounted in a few seconds under the saddle of the bicycle, without the need for further installations. When used without a bicycle, it can also be used as an electrically powered handcart in pedestrian-only zones and inside buildings. Thanks to NÜWIEL’s modular design, the trailer can be used with different cargo structures. It is possible to install an existing transport box system on the trailer, or to develop a custom box for different needs.

Sustainable pensions

Matter is a sustainable alternative to a normal pension plan that avoids investments in fossil fuels, weapons and tobacco, while more money is invested in companies working towards a sustainable future. A Matter customer can track their savings through a digital platform and see the impact of those savings. Matter claims that we have invested 4 to 5 times as much money in fossil fuels as we can afford to extract and combust if we are to avoid catastrophic climate changes. A calculator shows a Matter customer how much their savings have contributed in terms of reducing CO₂ emissions and waste production.

Green Urban Data

Environmental intelligence for healthy cities

Green Urban Data produces software that monitors and measures temperature at the neighbourhood level, locating the most vulnerable areas and offering recommendations for action to stabilize the temperature in those areas. Their innovation aims to counteract the effects of temperature on the health and economy of a city, using software as a service (SaaS) to adapt a city to the effects of temperature variations, involving and empowering its citizens. Possible uses are for the interconnectivity of green urban areas, the design of protocols to act against heat waves, and the planning and design of green infrastructure.

Solatom

Solatom solar concentrator

Solatom is a solar concentrator designed for generating high temperature heat (steam, hot water or thermal oil) in industrial processes. Solatom's modules are formed by rows of mirrors that track the sun, reflecting the sunlight on a vacuum tube. The fluid circulating through the tube absorbs the reflected energy producing an increase in the temperature of the fluid (up to 300 °C ). Each module has a nominal power of 15 kW thermal. When more capacity is needed, the modules are joined together, increasing the total power of the plant. The system is designed for be deployed on the rooftop, with a specific weight under 23 kg/m².
