Solid state portable cooler

India's National Physical Laboratory has developed a portable, solid state cooling technology that does not require the compressor or refrigerant found in conventional refrigerators. It can therefore run off a low-power supply of only 75 Watts DC, e.g. directly from solar photovoltaic cells and batteries. The cooler was developed for two principle applications: 

1. as a low-cost refrigerator for rural populations to store food and provide affordable comfort

2. to compliment India’s immunization program for rural populations of children by storing vaccines at low temperatures for a long time. 

With a long lifespan and needing little maintenance, the solid state cooler maintains 5 °C at an ambient temperature of 40 °C but can cool to -2 °C if required.

Woshapp service agents cycle to the car and carefully hand wash it in an environmentally friendly way, using only about 400 millilitres of water per wash, thereby saving 99% of the water consumed by a regular car wash. The method provides better quality than a mechanical car wash, avoiding the scratches that can occur.

Small-scale decentralised upgrading of waste

Takachar developed technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and licensed it in order to develop small-scale, low-cost, portable biomass treatment systems that can be attached to the back of tractors, trailers, or even donkey carts. Takachar’s mobile biomass systems can then be deployed on farms in remote areas to take small pockets of biomass residues and process them onsite into a chemically densified form that is moisture-resistant and volumetrically dense. This can in turn reduce the logistical, collection, and disposal cost by about 75% compared to current alternatives such as baling and pelleting. Takachar therefore provides farmers with a cost-effective way to clear their land of crop residues rapidly after harvest.

UN Water estimates that around one-fifth of the world’s population live in areas of water scarcity. By 2025 more than 3 billion people could be living in water-stressed countries. It is difficult to change people’s habits. But what if we could use the water much more efficiently? Conventional taps allow water to gush out at around 10–12 liters per minute–but only a fraction of that water  is actually used for washing hands or rinsing plates. Thus, billions of gallons of fresh water run literally straight down the drain. Altered:Nozzle “atomizes” the water, breaking it up into a high speed dense mist made out of millions of individual drops. This way the user gets in contact with, and uses, every single drop of water coming out of the tap. The company also increases the speed of the water up to 50 km/h to increase rinsing. The result is full functionality and a high user experience with only 2% of the flow compared to a regular tap. This is a simple retro-fit that installs in less than a minute in most existing taps in the world today. This design is said to significantly reduce water consumption as well as energy.

The system was operated over more than 6,000 hours with an energy cycling profile resembling operation in a power plant, with outstanding results, according to EnergyNest. In 2018, a first free-standing commercial module was manufactured and displayed at the company’s assembly site in Rotterdam. This will allow EnergyNest to build inexpensive, modular, scalable, and durable storage systems, which will be easy to install and operate. Since the technology’s two main materials – concrete and steel – are broadly available and fully recyclable, it can be deployed in any geographical location, and up to 80 percent of the storage materials can be sourced locally.

Scandinavian Water Technology AB (SWATAB) has developed a solution they call DIRO-TM21 that enables washing without detergents, at lower temperatures, and for shorter drying times. DIRO-TM21 is a filter system that can be readily installed in any public or private facility. Since DIRO filters out particles in water that can adhere to fabric, the laundry comes out not only clean but also soft to the touch.

One of the company’s key sectors is marine where the Climeon Ocean™ solution converts waste heat from ship engines creating up to several GWh of “free” electricity each year. For some ships, that translates into a savings of more than 1,000 metric tons of fuel or 3,000 metric tons of CO2 per year according to Climeon AB. 

An even larger sector is steel where Swedish steel producer SSAB is reaping the benefits from running Climeon Ocean™ at their production site in Borlänge.

Solar PV’s generation capacity relies on receiving solar radiation. Traditional photovoltaic generating plants install crystalline silicon panels in a fixed base so that the panels are at a constant angle relative to solar trajectory.

Intelligent solar tracking system technology innovated by Huangshan Runsol, uses an intelligent tracking remote control to rotate solar PV panels automatically with the movements of the sun. Thus, the solar panel’s generating capacity was enhanced by enabling its surface to receive much more solar radiation. This technology extensively applies to solar PVs installed in fish ponds, mountains, and roofs with a max slope of 20 degrees and temperature ranging -35℃ to 65℃. This effectively solves natural environmental problems, foundation settlements as well as other problems that may damage the system. Compared to common stationary supports, this tracking system could improve power generating capacity by 10% to 45%. It also has a 25-years operation life for photovoltaic power plants. This benefit is far greater than the initial construction and maintenance costs. Intelligent solar tracking system has passed the UL2703 and UL3703 standard test certifications in October 2016.

PV power has become an important solution of the future energy problem, however, in the manufacturing cost of mainstream crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV modules, silicon wafer accounts for a big proportion, and it is also the most energy consuming and polluting process in the PV industry chain.

Yes Solar Energy Technology develops a route with no cutting and slicing process to fabricate the super-thin and flexible c-Si solar cells. It eliminates the typical energy intensive steps in traditional production process of solar cell, such as the Siemens process, ingot, slicing, etc. The consumption of silicon material is only 1/10 of the traditional process, and the cell manufacturing energy consumption is only 1/4 of traditional c-Si technology. With advanced battery structure and processing technology, the component efficiency can reach as high as 22%.It also shows outstanding performance with wide angle light and weak light. The working temperature of component is 5-7 degrees lower than that of the traditional product, leading to a greatly improved energy output in the actual operating environment. Packaging on flexible substrate is achieved through the breakthrough in the process integration. By a unique intermediate-pressure-plasma process, a c-Si thin-film can be obtained with a deposition rate of 10 times faster, a production yield of 2 times higher, and a temperature of 400 ℃ lower than those typically attained by the conventional thermal chemical vapor deposition.

The product is mainly used in the differentiated market including building integration, military applications, solar powered aircraft, stratospheric airship, unmanned aerial vehicles, mobile electronics, electric vehicles, smart wear, etc. When large-scale produced in the future, it will also be applied to distributed PV power generation projects.

Donkey Republic developed and deployed a hub-centric bike sharing platform. The hub-centric model uses designated parking locations for the pick-up and drop-off of rentable bikes. A hub is defined by the GPS coordinates of a point and a radius (e.g. 10 meters) around that point within which riders can drop off a bike. This allows local authorities to control the use of public space, easily monitor locations and influence fleet distribution and growth. Users can count on bikes being available at specific locations. The Donkey Republic system is enabled by the communication between a mobile app and an electronic ring lock placed on the bike, via a low energy Bluetooth connection.

The machines are solar powered, high capacity and very efficient, giving farmers access to a sustainable energy source and providing food security and the opportunity to create an additional income.

With 8 million tons of copper in use each year, a system that allows for repair of copper parts without the need for expensive and energy-intense remelting is sorely needed. The technique developed by Dong He uses electrochemistry to restore broken or damaged copper parts. Partial or whole surface re-manufacturing of parts can be achieved under normal temperatures and pressures, which results in significant energy savings. It is estimated that the electrochemical system uses as little as one tenth of the energy that would be required by a conventional remelting. The performance of the restored parts is also not compromised: testing has shown that the mechanical properties equal or surpass those of comparable materials from conventional production processes.

Devotion BOF technology utilize agriculture and forestry waste, such as straw, rice husk, and sawdust to produce liquid fuel. The preprocessed feedstocks are fed into the main reactor, where the flash heating in anaerobic or oxygen-deficient conditions completely reorganises the molecular structure of feedstocks through rapid pyrolysis. BOF is then made after the processes like separation in high temperature, purification, rapid condensation and so on. The conversion rate can reach up to 70% besides high value-added byproducts such as biomass combustible gases and biomass ashes. BOF produced by Devotion can be directly applied to thermal equipments like boilers and industrial furnaces as alternative fuels. Refined BOF, with its quality close to regular gasoline and diesel, can be used as fuel of automotive engines and diesel engines.
