Fervo Energy

Geothermal energy is a massive, mostly untapped resource for clean energy production. Previous developments of enhanced geothermal systems have primarily relied on designs utilizing vertical wells, single zone completions, and shear stimulation conceptual models, but have produced lower flowrates than required for commercial viability.

Through its novel and cost-effective reservoir engineering design, Fervo Energy aims to develop enhanced geothermal systems that produce high flow rate wells, tap into large accessible reservoir volumes, and operate in a wide variety of geologic settings.

Ferroamp have developed a flexible inverter called ‘EnergyHUb’ that enables a flexible integration of photo voltaic systems, energy storage, small-scale wind and electric car charging. This makes it possible to utilize the consumption variations between buildings at the same time as it is possible to cut power peaks, for example when electric cars are charged.  The company claims that what distinguishes EnergyHub from similar systems in the market is that it is bi-directional, that is, it can move energy in both directions. This makes it possible to connect photovoltaic cells, batteries for energy storage and other things.

In conventional air-conditioning systems, the cooling efficiency depends on atmospheric temperature. If the atmospheric temperatures are higher, efficiency of the air-conditioning system is lower and vice versa. The key innovation behind Geothermal Cooling System is the designing of a heat exchanger system that uses the earth temperature, which is much lower than atmospheric temperature to reject the heat. Lower temperatures significantly improve the efficiencies of the air-conditioning systems.

EnergyNest developed a thermal battery for thermal power plants and energy-intensive industries. The company recently installed and commissioned a pilot system with a combined capacity of 1 MWth. The company says that the system was operated over more than 6,000 hours with an energy cycling profile resembling operation in a power plant. In 2018, a first free-standing commercial module was manufactured and displayed at the company’s assembly site in Rotterdam. Since the technology’s two main materials – concrete and steel – are available and recyclable, it can be deployed in any geographical location, and up to 80% of the storage materials can be sourced locally.
